In our first class we explored some different painting techniques onto canvasses.
Here are the techniques I explored:
Spraying - using a garden sprayer and watered down paint, spray paint onto an area to get this effect.
Cross hatching - Load brush with paint then get rid of most the the excess. Lock your wrist and with your elbow control the brush strokes. Go in two different directions to create this effect.
Puddling - apply paint on a base colour that is still wet
Dry Brushing - drag a brush with very little paint on over the surface of the canvas
Stippling - Hold the brush vertically and 'stab' the canvas
Scumbling - use a base colour and two to three shades of the base colour. Load these shades onto different brushes and using a twisting motion, blend all these colours together
Splattering - use watered down paint and flick it at the canvas
Sponging - use a natural sponge to create interesting effects
Our assignment for next weeks session is to create something using these techniques. This can be something like a wall texture. I am going to try and create a piece of foliage as I feel like I'll be able to explore lots of techniques doing this.
Learning all the techniques has been really helpful and hopefully I'll be able to apply them to any set painting work I do back in England. At AUCB we always hire in a specialist set painter to decide how things will be painted, but I think that it might be nice for the students to be given a chance to work it out like they do here.
